Xmittens

Xmittens are a true family affair. The design originated in 2003 with textile artist Amber Coppings as a way to keep her hands warm while working in her Lawrenceville studio. The concept evolved, until the mittens became not only a local favorite, but a source of income that helped sustain her artistic practice.

A healthy blend of creativity, sustainability, and good manufacturing practice was built into Xmittens from the very beginning. Xmittens are only ever made with Recycled Polyester (RPET) fleece made from recycled plastic, and the cross design on every single pair is interpreted at the machine by the stitchers who make them. Machine operators are given a rare chance to play when we're making these!

Amber hired Why Sew in 2018 to help produce her last Pittsburgh batch of Xmittens, and when she decided to retire from operating the brand, she passed the torch to us!

We are proud to offer many of Amber's original Xmittens designs. We also think you'll love our own rework of the classic Xmitten, with its double-layer thick & cushy cuff and extra padding for warmth around the thumb and finger openings! As always, both new school and old school styles are vegan, made from RPET fleece, and are manufactured right here in Pittsburgh by stitchers working humane hours and making a living wage.
